expanding from beyond its origins in Panama and Puerto Rico to becoming an undeniable global force. Yet, within this massive cultural explosion,

few artists are navigating the sound with the distinct, subversive energy of Isabella Love Story.

Originally from Honduras, but shaped by formative migration to the U.S. and the liminal spaces

of the internet, the Montreal-based artist has developed an aesthetic she calls plastic fantasy,

a hyper-styled world of bootleg luxury and cinematic flair.

Earlier this month, I caught up with her in London in the middle of a worldwide tour for her new album, Vanity.

In this exchange, we explored how that record is a response to an obsession with the

dark side of beauty standards and how she uses an exaggerated persona to externalize and confront

personal vulnerabilities. We also talked about her place within the wider reggaeton landscape,

touching on her efforts to reclaim and feminize a historically male-dominated genre, the financial

erasure of women in the scene, and how her experimental approach challenges the self-seriousness
