Welcome to Resident Advisors Exchange. I'm Chloe Lula, the Exchange's senior producer.

There are few names as widely loved in modern dance music as Bristol-based producer Omar McCutcheon,

otherwise known as Batu. His label Time Dance has been instrumental in shaping contemporary electronic music, championing

a mutant breed of rhythmic UK bass and electronica that escapes any obvious genre touchstones,

as well as shining a spotlight on artists like Baraco, Ploy, Hodge, and a host of producers

who push musical and cultural boundaries and frequently appear in the pages of R.A.

The label is celebrating its 10-year anniversary, and in this exchange, McCutcheon sat down with Gabe Zatan to reflect on the label's Afro-Futurist philosophy,

its journey over the decade, and the sense of purpose and direction that's developed over time.

He also talks about the impact that seems beyond the UK have on his productions and label curation

and how they offer perspectives that contrast with Europe's sometimes overly nostalgic take on dance music.

We live in a landscape that can sometimes feel oppressively dark, but McCutcheon feels optimistic about the future and music's potential to inspire and connect.
