If I were to ask you to name 10 movies as quickly as you can, how long would it take you?

What if I asked you to name 10 sports teams or 10 musicians or songs?

Now, what if I asked you to name the 10 Commandments? Could you do it?

A few years ago, I remember reading about a group of senators who sponsored a bill to protect the

display of the Ten Commandments on public property because they felt the Ten Commandments were

foundational to moral living. However, when asked by a reporter to name the Ten Commandments,

only one of the Senators could. A congressman sponsoring a similar proposal in another state

could only name three of the Ten Commandments.

In fact, in one poll, less than 10% of Americans could name more than four of the Ten Commandments.

And some of the things people named weren't commandments at all.

For example, 23% of Americans thought the Second Commandment gave us the right to keep and bear arms.

And 31% said the Ninth Commandment gave us the right to keep and bear arms. And 31% said

the Ninth Commandment prohibited the removal of Ten Commandments displays. In this episode, we study

Exodus 18 through 20 and look not just at the Ten Commandments, but why those commandments are worth

thinking about in the first place and how they can help us
