Dr. Charles Leal was a 23-year-old Union Army surgeon on the night that President Lincoln was assassinated.

He had bought himself a ticket to our American cousin not to see the play, but to catch a glimpse of the

president. Dr. Lille was a great admirer of Lincoln and had attended his final speech

from the White House balcony three days earlier. When it was announced that Lincoln would be
