The climate crisis isn't coming, it's already here.

Extreme weather events are becoming the new normal across the world,

devastating landscapes and communities,

including a place I've known and loved for years,

northern Evia, in Greece.

Evias' long island stretched out beside the Greek mainland

just to the north of Athens.

For decades, my family spent summers here

near the little town of Limni on the island's east coast,

but the thickly forested mountains aren't much visited by strangers, even Greeks.

This is the sound of the unburnt forest.

A coastal forest of Halepopine,

the common pine in southern Greece,

and the highland forest on the mountain

above 500 metres of altitude,

incredible flowers all over the place.

There's laurel over there,

different kinds of pine,

there's sage and oregano growing on the ground,

and there's an eagle look up above the mountain there,
