Hello everybody and welcome back to the YouTube News podcast. My name is Benedict Townsend. So lovely to have you back. We took a little break last week because there was a bank holiday, a little day off for everyone here in the UK. But we're back now and we're revved up and feeling better than ever. And I'd like to open the show with a little quote. There's actually a tweet that I saw from a nice fellow. I'm not going to name him,

because I'm not looking to cause him any trouble, but he seems to make podcasts for a large

organization, and I'm going to read his tweet. It says, quote, good narrative podcasting requires

so much work from so many people, research, interviews, working with archival audio, writing scripts, etc.

And then there are guys who just turn on the mic and BS for an hour and put up huge numbers.

My name is Benedict Townsend, and I said, it is wonderful to have you here again if you are a return customer or indeed for the very first time

if there's your first foray into the world of YTNTP and golly gosh what an adventure you have ahead

of you and I just want to say you know I thought that tweet was quite funny up top because

you know I've written a narrative podcast I've sat down and spent ages crafting these

long podcasts, and I have a lot of respect for people who do it. There's some wonderful

podcasts out there. But also, I don't think you should think too badly upon people who turn

on a mic and BS for an hour in the words of this guy, because I don't know about you guys,

but when I listen to podcasts and, hey, drawing back the curtain a little bit,

Benedict listens to podcasts. That's crazy. You know, you don't know much about me. You know, I'm very rich and I have a show,

but I also listen to podcasts. Crazy. When I listen to podcasts quite often, it kind of feels like I'm just having a chat with friends,

albeit a chat where they're talking and I don't get to cut in because it's a one-way street.

But I quite like what a podcast is just a person or people hanging out, having a little chat.

Don't get me wrong, I also enjoy the really elaborate, highly produced podcasts.

But I think the mistake this guy is making is that sometimes you don't want podcasts to just

always be school. You know, you don't want podcasts to just always be school.

You know, you don't want to just sit and listen to a guy reading a homemade Wikipedia
