But while the country may have become an ideological battleground,

ordinary life they're still carried on. People went to their local shop, took their kids to school,

and enjoyed trips to the cinema. Kachahoya is the author of a new book Beyond the Wall,

which re-examines the experiences of ordinary people in the GDR.

And I spoke to her to uncover a new side of the communist state.

Your new book Beyond the Wall is a sweeping history of East Germany that encourages readers to see the GDR in full colour rather than just monotonous grey.

So what do you think that people in the West particularly have got wrong about East Germany up until now?
