Summary

This talk was given at the Thomistic Institute's 8th Annual "Conference for Priests: Evangelizing Your Parish," held July 29th - August 1st, 2019.

The work of evangelization is attractive, but it’s also difficult and perhaps even a bit intimidating. What is more, evangelization can be most challenging at home, within one’s own parish.

Featuring Fr. Peter John Cameron, OP (Province of St. Joseph) Fr. Anthony Giambrone, OP (Ecole Biblique), Fr. James Sullivan, OP (Province of St. Joseph), Fr. Damian Ference (Diocese of Cleveland), Fr. Jay Scott Newman (Diocese of Charleston), Fr. Augustine Wetta, OSB (Monk of St. Louis Abbey).

It's been one year since the summer of scandal, and although many would argue that things have only

0:06.3

gotten worse in the Catholic Church since, because I believe that Jesus rose from the dead and founded

0:12.7

his one holy Catholic and apostolic church, and because he promised that the gates of hell would not prevail

0:19.2

against it, I have to believe that things

0:21.8

are actually getting better, even if the process is a very slow and painful one.

Ours is a time of great purification, and purification is an uncomfortable and unpleasant experience,

because it means that the doctor has to get to work on a deep infection

0:39.9

that is keeping the body sick. And removing that infection through fire, ice, chemotherapy,

0:46.9

or by cutting it out, takes time and patience and trust. My guess is that if we went around this room, in addition to the national and international

0:56.8

stories of which we are all very familiar, each one of you would be able to add a heartbreaking

1:02.5

story from your own diocese or your own religious order about a clerical crime or a clerical

1:07.9

sin or some terrible story about a priest who failed to keep his ordination

1:12.8

promises or his religious vows. Such stories aren't hard to find, and even if you're the type

1:19.9

of priest who is naturally disposed to hope, it's easy to let such stories tempt us to despair

1:26.0

because it seems like they never stop. Someone else has

1:30.3

been accused. Did you hear about father's so-and-so? That guy was only ordained two years and he left

1:36.9

the priesthood. That priest was a spiritual director and he was caught doing what? And then we start

1:43.7

thinking about our own lives

1:45.0

and about our own vocations.

1:47.7

What about my pre-conversion days?

1:50.5

What about my own moments of weakness?

1:52.9

What if someone makes something up about me?
