Summary

This talk was given at the Thomistic Institute's 8th Annual "Conference for Priests: Evangelizing Your Parish," held July 29th - August 1st, 2019.

The work of evangelization is attractive, but it’s also difficult and perhaps even a bit intimidating. What is more, evangelization can be most challenging at home, within one’s own parish.

Featuring Fr. Peter John Cameron, OP (Province of St. Joseph) Fr. Anthony Giambrone, OP (Ecole Biblique), Fr. James Sullivan, OP (Province of St. Joseph), Fr. Damian Ference (Diocese of Cleveland), Fr. Jay Scott Newman (Diocese of Charleston), Fr. Augustine Wetta, OSB (Monk of St. Louis Abbey).

My topic for this afternoon was assigned.

0:04.0

I didn't pick it, but I'm very happy to do it.

0:08.0

And it's parish evangelization with the engaged.

0:14.0

One verse that comes to my mind is Acts 244. And it's just the first half of that verse. And it says,

0:26.9

And all who believed were together. Now that's part of a larger passage, of course. Acts 242 follows Peter's preaching on Pentecost when

0:42.3

3,000 were converted by his preaching. I don't know if it was an expository preaching.

0:51.3

I have to first find what expository means.

0:54.9

I don't even know if I do that, but if Peter did it, then he certainly won those converts.

But that longer verse, right before it, says that because of Peter's preaching and his direction to them to repent and to believe in the gospel. Acts 242 says, they held steadfastly to the

1:16.8

apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of the bread, and to the prayers. And then just a

1:25.4

little bit further on, it says, And all who believed were together.

1:30.1

I think that any topic like this in evangelization of the engaged,

1:36.6

it has to have that as its context,

1:38.9

that we're welcoming these young people who are preparing for marriage into something far greater

1:47.3

than themselves, but also into something that is a mystery, something, as Father Newman pointed

1:54.5

out, that has to be revealed to us. That's what we're offering them. But it's not just a piece of it. It's the entirety of the

2:04.4

gospel. And so that's why Acts 242 reminds us that it's not just about the Apostles' teaching and

2:11.6

no fellowship or breaking of the bread but no prayers. It has to be all of it together. The Apostles' teaching,

2:20.2

the fellowship, the breaking of the bread, and the prayer. And those four things, actually,

2:25.4

when I came upon that verse years ago, for the first time, I thought, well, rather narcissistically,

2:33.3

which I think often, I discovered the secret of the

2:36.8

catechism, because those are the four pots.
