The last time there was an election to the European Parliament

Britain was still an EU member and the Brexit Party topped the UK poll. Quite a lot

has happened in Britain since then but European politics has also shifted quite a lot,

and the UK is certainly not alone in incubating radical, populist and Eurosceptic parties.

This weekend, with 27 member states electing MEPs, most analysts are predicting a surge in support

for nationalists and far-right candidates.

If the polls are right, the whole European project is about to take a significant rightward tilt, with significant

consequences in terms of economic, defence and environment policy, as well as dealing a psychological

shock to Europe's left-leaning liberals and centre-ground moderates.
