I'm Elvis Mitchell, and my guest is writer-director Eugene Nash, whose new film is the romantic musical drama.

Sylvie's Love is not just an old tune by Art Tatum.

Eugene, thanks so much for being here.

Thank you for having me, Elvis.

I appreciate it.

Oh, my pleasure.

And one of the things I want to say about the movie is just, I mean, there's almost not a shot in

that that couldn't be an old Blue Note album cover from the late 50s or early 60s.

Well, that's a really great compliment. That certainly was one of my influences visually.

Because I don't have to say, as a musician, you came about that time in the 90s when there

were so many album

covers that were referencing those blue note visuals now i think in some ways that's a

like influence on you both as a musician and as a visual stylist yeah without a doubt i mean i i was

fortunate enough to grow up in a household and have most of those albums in my house.

And, you know, so I got to, I knew what they looked like.

And so that was sort of in my DNA.

And I was thinking, too, that that almost sort of spells a relationship.

Because in some ways, Sylvie, your protagonist is like a lot of the bop musicians

and that she was ahead of her time.
