Summary

Poverty affects more than a quarter of the world's population, and that is why erasing it is a principal objective for humanity, enshrined as the first of a number of goals (SDGs) in the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Poverty is more than just having insufficient income – it is a multidimensional phenomenon closely related to unequal access to education, health and other basic services. Poverty eradication is an ongoing objective of EU development policy.

But how do we go about this enormous challenge?

And are we well on track to achieve our goals?

income countries. Now, appalling as they still are, if we compare these figures with figures

1:00.9

from the 1990s, we'd have to conclude that global poverty rates have been falling at an unprecedented

1:06.9

pace over the past two decades. but billions around the world are still struggling

1:12.6

to meet basic needs.

1:13.6

And unless there is a serious policy shift, about 6% of the world's population, most of

1:19.6

them in Africa, will remain in extreme poverty in 2030, which makes the achievement of the

1:24.6

first sustainable development goal a major global challenge.

1:34.9

Besides this, inequalities are also rising. Consider another figure. Today, the world's 26 richest people own as much as the 3.8 billion poorest people in the world. But what causes poverty?

1:42.5

Let's have a look.

1:44.6

Defined by the World Bank as pronounced deprivation of well-being, poverty has many sides

1:51.5

to it and multiple causes.

1:53.8

At regional and national level, nature and climate are key factors.

1:58.4

Areas affected by droughts or annual floods, for example, are more affected by

2:02.3

food insecurity and poverty levels. Conflict and insecurity, another two powerful drivers of poverty
