The European Union is putting Meta under the microscope.

So Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, is being investigated by the European Commission

and the focuses over its handling of political content, including a suspected Russian influence campaign.

The French government has complained that its countries being overwhelmed with propaganda and

disinformation, and this is all really important with so many elections coming up around the world.

Here's the BBC's Zoe Kleinman.

I think the EU would deny it but it's fair to say there's a bit of pre-election posturing

going on here. You know the EU Commission is facing a vote next month and

here it is saying we're not going to let these big US companies overlook their

responsibilities to protect our citizens. We've got new rules and they are tough

but we do also know that there are many many attempts

at spreading disinformation on all the platforms all the time especially in the run-up to

elections and what it's saying specifically in relation to Meta is it's concerned

that the content moderation system isn't robust enough

and that it might breach EU law. This is particularly regarding the oversight of advertising.

It's also questioning how something called Shadow Banning works.

This is where accounts which post lots of political content can sometimes become less visible.

The EU says it isn't necessarily very transparent how that actually works.
