So this is a huge project.

Where do you start when you're writing about places big and diverse as Europe?

So I'll tell you how this book really came about, in which I at first thought I wanted to write quite a conventional book about France, a book in which I would sort of wander around France and sort of pontificate about it and sort of occasionally meet people and talk to them.
