Summary

Were Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman star-crossed lovers or creatively cursed? This week, Chris & Lizzie plumb the memories of all involved in the 2004 sci-fi hit, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a movie Charlie Kaufman tried endlessly to break up with. Plus, Gondry and Jim Carrey's loveless marriage, how Kate Winslet set the tone, and Mark Ruffalo and Tom Wilkinson's wildly different reactions to the on set vibes.

Hello, and welcome back to What Went Wrong, your favorite podcast, full stop, that just so happens to be about movies and how it's nearly impossible to make them, let alone a good one,

0:38.3

let alone a visually revolutionary, metaphysical exploration into the core of relationships,

0:48.8

sadness, and love. I'm one of your hosts, Lizzie Bassett, here as always with my co-host, Chris Winterbauer,

0:54.9

and Chris, what do you have for us today? Today we are discussing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless

1:28.0

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind before? And what were your thoughts upon watching or re-watching it for the podcast? Well, of course I've seen this. This came out when we were what, like 14, 15? 15, yeah. I saw this when it came out. I don't think I saw it in theaters, but we had it on DVD. and I watched it quite a lot.

1:44.7

And then, you know, in college, obviously kept watching it.

1:47.6

But I personally... came out. I don't think I saw it in theaters, but we had it on DVD, and I watched it quite a lot.

1:44.7

And then, you know, in college, obviously kept watching it. But I probably haven't seen this

1:50.0

movie in close to 20 years. It's one that I thought I knew back to front. And I really thought

1:56.0

I knew what I was getting into when I sat down to watch it for the podcast. And I will tell you, and I texted

2:01.7

you this, but as it started, I did feel a creeping sense of dread because I was like, oh, no.

2:08.6

Oh, no. Uh-oh. The manic pixie dream is very alive in this movie. Yeah, Turtle Sunshine said,

2:16.2

Garden State, holds my fear.
