0:09.7	Last time in chapter 8 of Esther, there was a great reversal of both fortune and power.
0:19.5	Everything that Heyman boasted about was given to Mordecai.
0:23.2	The king took the signet ring he had given to Haman and gave it to Mordecai, along with the power
0:28.8	to rule over the kingdom. The king gave Esther Haman's entire estate, and Esther appointed Mordecai
0:35.3	over the estate. Then Esther went to work again for her people
0:39.2	and begged the king to do something about the death decree. The king gave Esther and Mordecai the
0:45.4	power to write a new decree so that the Jews could defend themselves. The decree went out and the
0:50.9	people rejoiced. Their world had been turned right side up.
0:55.2	All right, here's the setup for where we are.
0:57.7	The day for Haman and Mordecai's edicts to face off has arrived.
1:03.1	But before we read the outcome, I want to discuss the controversial wording of both.
1:09.4	So, for review, Haman's edict read as follows. Esther chapter three
1:15.1	starting in verse 13. Dispatches were sent by couriers to all the king's provinces with the order
1:21.3	to destroy, kill, and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, women and children on a single day,
1:27.1	the 13th day of the 12th month,
1:29.3	the month of Adar, and to plunder their goods.
1:32.0	So Haman's edict permitted the Persians to kill all Jews, young, old women, and children,
1:41.1	and seize their possessions.
1:47.6	Now, Mordecai's edict read like this.
1:54.7	In Esther chapter 8, starting in verse 11, the king's edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves to destroy, kill, and annihilate the armed men of any
