Summary

Grant interviews his friend Wright Thompson (at 32:04), a senior writer at ESPN and the author of the recent New York Times Best-Seller Pappyland: A Story Of Family, Fine Bourbon and the Things That Last. They discuss his book, his interest in Kentucky and his approach to writing, including an anthology's worth of Thompson's phenomenal soccer writing over the years. Those include stories by Thompson on Luis Suárez and Uruguayan soccer, Brazilian protests ahead of World Cup 2014, the culture of Italian football, Paul Pogba, the Boca Juniors-River Plate rivalry and the death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori. Before that, Grant and Chris Wittyngham break down a busy soccer weekend, including: the USWNT's 2-0 win over Brazil; Inter's big 3-0 victory over Milan; whether we have concerns about Christian Pulisic at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel; Liverpool's nosedive; Man City's breathtaking run; whether Messi will stay or leave Barcelona; and Bayern Munich and Atlético Madrid dropping more points in Germany and Spain. Hey there, welcome to Football with Grant Wall. Thanks so much for joining me. Today's interview

0:12.1

guest is Wright Thompson, the phenomenal senior writer for ESPN. We've had some great guests

0:18.4

lately, including Bria Felicien, Ivan Gazetus and Semra Hunter. I also encourage you to check out

0:25.3

my podcast series, American Prodigy. They've ready to do story. All eight episodes are out,

0:32.3

and you can binge all of them to your heart's content. We'll have Wright Thompson on soon,

0:37.2

but let's start with some talk about The Soccer World with my friend Chris Wittingham,

0:41.7

the radio voice of Inter Miami and a co-host of The Chelsea Mike Up podcast. Chris, it's been a

0:48.9

while. Thanks for joining me. How are you? Far too long. Let's get cracking here on The Soccer News.

0:53.6

Lots to talk about. Let's start with the game that just ended. We're recording late on Sunday

0:58.2

here, US Women's National Team 2, Brazil, NIL, Kristen Press, Megan Rapinoe score for the US in

1:07.2

a challenging game against the team coached by our previous interview guest, Pia Soon Haga.

1:14.6

What were your thoughts here? Well, I first want to start off by saying that the way that

1:18.0

Kristen Press takes that first goal is exquisite. And I thought it was really interesting that

1:22.6

Ali Wagner kept pointing out, well, this is kind of the tactic here. It's kind of overwhelm

1:27.6

various wings, right? So if the ball is on the left hand side, Crystal Dunn can get forward,

1:32.4

and then Lindsay Hurrayan can have the ball in front of her, and then Kristen Press is running

1:35.8

in that channel. And kind of that wave of three down that left hand side is really difficult.

1:40.4

So Kristen Press gets one V1 against the center back and is able to get around Hurrayan and curl

1:44.7

it in the corner without ever looking at her target. Like knew how new where the back post was

1:49.1

and picked it out to perfection. But it was kind of a weird balance between the US for me being

1:53.9

a bit wasteful both in terms of the way that they kept possession and the chances that they got.

1:58.8

I mean, there was a couple of clear one-on-one breakaway opportunities that they just don't do
