Summary

Episode 147 of the Sports Media Podcast features two guests. First up is Ian Darke, the lead play-by-play commentator of ESPN’s soccer coverage. He will be in London this month calling UEFA EURO 2020 for ESPN. Darke is followed by Anthony Crupi, a sports media reporter for Sportico. In this podcast, Darke discusses the favorites for the tournament; calling the Euros from London’s Wembley Stadium and the IMG studios in London; the in-stadium protocols Darke has to follow because of COVID; how he preps for the tournament; why Poland is the toughest team for pronunciations; why the Floyd Mayweather-Logan Paul boxing exhibition was cynical and dangerous; stories from his contemporaries about sparring with all-time greats, and more. Crupi discusses the first round of the NBA playoffs averaging 3.06 million viewers, up 46% over 2020 and up 3% versus 2019; what the viewership numbers mean; why the second round of the NBA playoffs will be a significant viewership challenge for the NBA; the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs averaging a total audience of 642,000 viewers across NBC, NBCSN, USA, CNBC and digital outlets, up 6 percent 2020 but NHL’s least-watched first round since 2013; what those numbers mean; what the best viewership possibilities for the NHL, and more. Hey, everybody. This is Richard Deich, and welcome to the sports media podcast. My producer is Sean Cherry, Patrick Antenetti, out this week. We at Sports Media Podcasts are thinking about he and his family. Our guests this week, two guests, two excellent guests.

0:24.0

Ian Dark is up first. Does not really need an introduction. If you are a soccer fan, one of the

0:29.5

premier voices calling world football, calling global soccer, it's called an immense amount of big

0:37.2

games in the United States as the

0:39.0

SPN's lead broadcaster for more than a decade on that sport. This month he will be in London

0:44.7

calling the Euros and he is on site there with Stuart Robson at Wembley Stadium as well as the IMG

0:52.8

studios where they'll call some games there.

0:55.7

And Ian kind enough to sort of just talk about the tournament, his preparation,

1:00.1

you know, what it's going to be like for him in terms of protocol, how you try to figure out

1:06.5

some of the world's difficult names when it comes to athletes, at least for an American audience.

1:11.7

We're not used to always hearing them. And then we get a little bit into Floyd Medweather and

1:16.7

Logan Paul. Again, I think if you know Ian's work, you know that he's called some major

1:21.5

boxing matches over the years. And he thought this was a very cynical exhibition, which it certainly was, but definitely a money-making one as well.

1:30.3

So we appreciate his thoughts on that.

1:32.1

He's followed by Anthony Crupi, who is a sports media reporter for Sportico, and we get into the NBA viewership, which was excellent in the first round.

1:41.0

They will struggle a little bit in the second round, but first round viewership, probably the best viewership story the NBA has had now in a couple of years. Very, very

1:48.8

good numbers for them, especially the Clippers Mavericks game seven. We also talk about the

1:53.7

NHL and their numbers, which were not as good, they had a struggling first round and it'll be

1:58.8

interesting to see if they can rebound as the viewership heads further.

2:03.7

And so, Crupi is, as I've said many times, one of the best at this stuff.

2:08.4

He's very, very good in analyzing the metrics of this because he worked at Ad Age for a long time

2:13.8

and has the best sources when it comes to media buyers.
