Soldier Curia and her friend Schuster are rescued from a planet and introduced to a crew that's not welcoming except for the Technician Packie.

We then discovered that the avarator, the person who hired her, is a lot more than he seems, as Curia stumbles upon a spongy bit of his external consciousness.

After an argument about salvage, she realizes they're salvaging a siege knot that's known as The First Doom in Legends on several worlds.
