Erythema, nodosum, is a condition where red lumps appear on the patient's shins.

Erathema means red and nodosum directly translates from Latin as nots, referring to lumps.

It's caused by inflammation of the subcutaneous fat on the shins.

Inflammation of fat is called paniculitis.

It's caused by a hypersensitivity reaction.

In about half of patients there is no identifiable cause.
