1:20.2	Today we are going to kick off one of the great stories of survival in the history of exploration
1:24.2	and that is Ernest Shackleton's endurance expedition.
1:27.2	Last time we left endurance departing England in early August of 1914,
1:32.2	just as war was breaking out across Europe.
1:34.2	Shackleton was troubled at the idea of continuing with the expedition,
1:38.2	with a great conflict looming over the continent.
1:40.2	But most people believe that the war would be a short lived affair, months, not years.
1:45.2	The last major war in Europe had been the Franco-Prussian War in 1870.
1:49.2	The Prussians had crushed the French in six months and in the process formed the German Empire.
1:54.2	Most people expected a similar affair.
