With this summer's Olympic Games will mark the 100th anniversary of an incredible performance and a display of

shocking faith by Scottish gold medalist Eric Little, whose story was immortalized in the 1981

Oscar-winning film, Chariots of Fire, a

about Christian and son of Scottish Presbyterian missionaries to China,

Little was an athlete of tremendous promise all the way back from his youth.

In addition to running, Little was selected to play for Scotland's international rugby team seven times.

And alongside his rigorous athletic training was his rigorous faith.

In particular, Little practice resting on the Sabbath. was his

When his athletic prowess took him to the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris,

France, the schedule of events that year to the But because the race was scheduled on the Sabbath, he dropped out.

As one of his peers recalled, that decision, quote,

caused tremendous furor among many people,

particularly with the newspapers and journalists, some even called him a traitor to his country.

Still, the Scottish runner refused to race on Sunday.

Instead, he ran in the 200-meter and 400 400 meter events.

Races not scheduled on Sunday and for which he had not trained.

Incredibly, he took bronze in the 200 meter and gold in the 400 meter,

finishing 5 meters ahead of the pack.
