The Reformation starts because he has a pastoral and a biblical concern, that he's been sent to study the scriptures by his own father, confessor, by Stoubitts.

He's been made a doctor of the church, and he believes it is his God-given vocation to preach what the scriptures

preach. And what he starts to notice, especially with the indulgence controversy, is that

what the church is teaching is not only counter to what you're finding in the scriptures. It's

actually harmful to the people of God. And so he's really making a pastoral move.

It's not just Luther saying it's my conscience versus the church.

And is it the individual or the collective that matters?

What Luther is saying is, did Christ Jesus do enough to save me or not?

And if he did, then we've really got to reevaluate how we're doing theology,

how we're doing preaching, how we're helping the people of God, because what Roman is doing

is certainly not. When he goes to the diet of worms and he stands up to make his confession,

he's very likely that he does not say at the end, here I stand, I can do no
