Today, I want to tell you about Padre Pio,

and the time Jesus took care of him in a miraculous way.

During Lent, the church invites us to draw closer to Jesus by doing

three things, praying, fasting, and almsgiving. We've spoken about prayer and fasting. But what is

alms giving? What does it mean to give alms? The word alms comes from the Greek word for mercy or pity. Alms are merciful

acts of giving to those in need. We can give alms by giving our money or food or even giving

our time and talents to the needy around us. St. Padre Pio experienced how Jesus wants us to take care of the needy in a personal and

Padre Pio was a capuchin friar in Italy.

His country was at war and needed more men to be soldiers.

So Pio was forced to join the army as a medic, even though he was a friar.

Pio offered up his work as a medic as a sacrifice for peace and his fellow soldiers.

But then, Pio got very sick. He had no other choice but to go home to get better. On his way home, he missed his train. He was cold and weak
