but I decided to go to the University of Kentucky and Lexington. About an hour and a half away.

There were closer schools, but I wanted to get out and see something new. My mom was a controlling parent. My dad left us when I was in high

school, and from the age of 15 to 18, I felt smothered. She was overwhelming, needy. In retrospect, I can see what was happening. Her husband left.

I was approaching the end of high school. Kids don't stick around in Olive Hill after high

school. Not anymore. She was afraid I'd leave her too. And I did, but only just to Lexington,

a small to medium-sized city, about 90 minutes west.
