Summary

Synopsis: With Syria beset by regional enemies, three kings face off at the Battle of the Oenoparos River.  The lone survivor, King Demetrius II, inaugurates his reign with the violent destruction of Antioch. “And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander’s kingdom, and join it to his own…Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known. Then Ptolemy entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt.” – 1 Maccabees, Chapter 11 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

landed they'd started plotting their revenge. Now Demetrius the first had married

his sister Loudacy in 160 BC and his eldest son

Antigonus was already dead. So doing the math in 150 BC, Demetrius and Antiochus were only seven or eight.

Which meant that, while their hearts might be in it, the actual planning was left to advisors, likely the same members of their

father's regime who'd helped them escape from Syria. Early on the boys were separated, probably for their own protection.

The older boy, Demetrius, was taken to Crete, which, as you may have gathered from Fizcon's intrigues was basically a one-stop shop for

Greek mercenaries.

His advisors made contact with a commander named Lasshenes and paid him to assemble an army.

Demetrius's younger brother Antiochus was sent to the Anatolian coastal city of C-Day.

And while his older brother prepared his invasion,

or as he viewed it, dynastic restoration,

Antiochus was forced to wait for news. But he wouldn't have to wait very long.

In 147 BC, Thea and Alexander got word that Demetrius had launched his attack.

2:26.5

And despite Alexander's preparations, it didn't come from the Mediterranean, but instead from

the mountains of Solicia.

2:35.1

Which was pretty smart planning for a number of reasons.
