Summary

Synopsis: Cleopatra Thea convinces her son Antiochus VIII Grypus to return to Syria and share the throne. But once Zabinas is defeated and the kingdom secure, Grypus decides to avenge his brother’s murder. “Ptolemy (Physcon)…proceeded to devote his entire strength to the destruction of Alexander (Zabinas’) kingdom, which the latter had acquired by Ptolemy’s resources solely because of his hatred for Demetrius (II). He therefore sent assistance to Grypus on a massive scale and also gave him the hand of his daughter, Tryphaena, in marriage.” – Justin, Epitome of the Philippic History of Pompeius Trogus, Book 39 “After recovering his father’s throne and being freed from threats from abroad, Grypus became the target of his mother’s treachery. Through her lust for power she had already betrayed her husband, Demetrius, and killed her other son; now she took it ill that her prestige was diminished by Grypus’ victory, and so she set before him a cup of poison.” – Justin, Epitome of the Philippic History of Pompeius Trogus, Book 39 Learn more about your ad choices. to make her pay. It was pretty straightforward. The entire court was on the same page and they conspired to kill his

in order to rule through the youngest. So getting rid of her

was both justified and long overdue. But there was one small entanglement.

Nysa was the sister of the Pontic King, Mithridates the fifth,

who was maybe the only person in the world who actually regretted her death.

1:35.0

Or maybe he just regretted losing his influence in Cabadocia.

Either way, Mithrodati suggested that if you wanted to keep their relationship friendly, Ariarathies should

marry his eldest daughter, the Pontic Princess Loudacy.

1:52.0

Ariarathies agreed. the Pontic Princess Loudacy.

1:53.2

Ariarathies agreed, the deed was done,

1:56.4

and the situation calmed back down.

2:00.0

Which was about the time they got the news, about the royal bloodshed in Syria.

So let's talk about the talk.

2:11.0

And I don't just mean how did Thea reveal to her subjects that she killed her son and taken the throne.

2:18.0

That part may have not actually been that bad.
