At the end of last episode, I promised we'd be talking about Napoleon's romantic life this time. Well, it turns out I had a lot more to say before we get there, so that

topic is postponed for the immediate future. Sorry if you were looking forward to that,

I assure you, it is coming.

Instead, we'll be focusing entirely on Napoleon's time with the Army of Italy in the spring and summer of 1794.

A lot of Napoleon biographies kind of gloss over this period, which I think is a mistake.

As some of you already know, Napoleon first rose to international fame as commander of the Army of Italy, fighting a remarkable campaign through Northern Italy in 1796 and 1797.

We are still a ways off from that in our story, but I see many of the roots of those victories

here in this period of time, so I think it's fruitful to talk about it a little.

Think of it as foreshadowing.
