In today's study, Dr. Misler continues his teaching on the Book of Revelation, chapter 3, verses 1 through 6.

The key thing you want to understand about Sardis in terms of its history is that it appeared to be impregnable. It was a thousand feet up on like a peninsula in the

mountains. Only the southern connection needed to be defended because it was a thousand

cliffs over a thousand feet, some say500 feet high, were on three sides.

So it was regarded as impregnable.

If you guard the one access to it, you were very strong.

And Cresus had a big battle against Cyrus, the Persian, in which he came home utterly defeated.

But he thought, by being back to his capital, he was safe, because it was regarded as

impregnable.

But you'll notice, I use the term ostensibly impregnable.

Ostensibly is an almost synonym for apparently, but something that's apparent, but not really so.

Okay?

And so this will establish the paradox that is suggested by the name Sardis in the beginning.

So it was situated on the northern slope of Montemlos, which is 950 feet above the broad valley.

I've seen other reference say it was 1,500, but in whatever the distance is.

And at the base is the river pectlis, which served also as a moat,

and making the city practically impregnable, because you could defend that one access to it,

and you've got it made.
