I'm your host, Matt Smith, and with me today is Associate Professor Kaelin Davenport,

Head of the Centre for Classical Studies at the Australian National University.

This is episode CCVI, the Gallic Empire.

A challenge to the Imperial Authority was hardly unusual in the third century,

but for whatever reason, posthumous decides to do things differently.

Rather than marching an army on Rome, he shaves off the Western provinces,

declaring Gaul, Gomania, Hispania, and Britannia, the independent but still very Roman, Gallic Empire.

He is Kaelin Davenport.

After Valerian's capture by Shpua, King of Kings of the Sasanian Persians in the middle of 260,

this precipitated a series of revolts throughout the Empire.

And the revolt we're going to be talking about today is a revolt of posthumous,

a Roman senatorial governor on the Rhine Frontier,

which eventually leads to the formation of an empire, which we call the Gallic Empire.

So this remained largely independent, going forward,

definitely for the rest of Gallianist's reign.

Yeah, so the Gallic Empire lasts until 274.

So we're going to be going a little bit beyond the reign of Gallianus in this episode,

just so that we can later link it up with the final years under Aralian.

So the Emperor Aralian, who reigns from 272-75,

reunites all the disparate parts of the Roman Empire.

And in 274, he finally defeats the so-called Gallic Empire.
