I'm your host Matt Smith and with me today is Dr. Christopher Gribben

and Adjunct Lecturer in Classics at Latrobe University.

This is episode C-C-I-V, Octavian's Illyrian War.

Part of the making of Octavian was the victories he had early in his career.

He defeated his rivals, conquered territory and united the senate behind him

whether they liked it or not.

One of these territories was Illyria in which he conducted campaigns

during the quiet years before his final battles against clear Patrick and Anthony.

It is perhaps in Illyria that we see Octavian display his greatest acts of bravery,

if not ability, he is Christopher Gribben.

Between 35 and 33 BC Octavian conducted a couple of campaigns in Illyria,

which is the area that is today mostly Croatia,

that eastern coast of the Adriatic and he conducted a couple of campaigns to

bring into line essentially the people who were living there,

consolidate Roman power and authority in the area as well as extended a little bit
