Hi everyone and welcome back to the Faculty of Horror podcasting from the Horrid Halls of

Academia. I'm Alex West with Andrea Sue Bassatti and I love governor. We are back for an episode

that I've certainly wanted to do for a very long time and we kind of talked about it on and off

and then I was just like you know what Andrea let's just do it. It's time we did our true crime

episode and I think we kind of dipped our toes in here a little bit and so maybe just at the

onset let's just get out that this isn't going to be a true crime style episode. There are

tons of true crime podcasts out there. We are not going to theorize who done it, who it was,

that's a different kind of podcast. Jack the Ripper though for me and certainly in the horror

context speaks to so so much more than that. Jack the Ripper is such a huge figure in Western

history in particular. It is a case that has boggled the minds of many consumed many people

have made careers off of it. It's a really huge idea and a huge notion to tackle so we picked

two really different films from two completely different eras and look at this case in very

different ways to try to start unpacking this case a little bit more and the more I certainly

dug into this case and I was when I was younger probably like a preteen into my teens. I was

really fascinated by the case of Jack the Ripper and I think in large part it was because he was

never caught and it was this creepy mystery and it happened and my dad's British so I kind of

had all these links back to it and I'll talk about that in a little bit but now coming to it as

an almost 36 year old woman I have some different perspectives not only the case but also the films

we're going to talk about today's yeah the films have aged within a certain context yeah that's

a very nice way to put it particularly for one of them yeah but Ripperology is a thing and that's

a word that I kept coming across you know Ripperology refers to all the theories as to who Jack was
