Summary

Jan Heine is the president of Rene Herse Cycles and editor in chief of Bicycle Quarterly. He's a builder, an engineer, a story teller, a photographer, and as it turns out is pretty handy on the bike too with a recent FKT on the Arkansas High Country Race's southern loop which spans 475 miles across northwest Arkansas! I've wanted to have Jan on the podcast for years and this seemed like just the right time. Congrats to Jan and welcome to the show. www.ReneHerseCycles.com www.BicycleQuarterly.com Jan's ride: https://www.strava.com/activities/7953986189 To try out Athletic Greens, visit: www.AthleticGreens.com/tedking

Hey there, everybody. Ted King here. Welcome to another episode of King of the Ride podcast,

0:09.6

the late October 22 edition. I don't often timestamp these episodes, or maybe I do,

0:17.8

but that's unintentional. They're largely meant to be evergreen, to be enjoyed at any time.

0:23.3

This episode is meant to be enjoyed at any time also.

0:26.4

However, we are talking with the recent winner of the Arkansas High Country Race,

0:31.2

a race that occurred starting October 8th, 2022.

0:35.2

He set the record on the Southern Loop, the FKT. Folks, ladies and gentlemen, our guest is

0:41.6

Jan Heine. Our esteemed guest, Jan is a friend. He is the president of Renee Hare's cycles,

0:49.3

which of course is a sponsor of mine. But frankly, ever since I first started talking to Jan many years ago, I

0:55.4

realized that he is a mind meant for cycling. And he's someone I've actually wanted to have on the

1:00.3

podcast for a number of years, regardless of the sponsorship. He's thinking on a different plane than

1:07.6

most people, even within the sport of cycling. Check out his book,

1:11.2

The All-Road Revolution, which is incredibly well written, and frankly, I think, is just as

1:15.5

interesting to the non-cyclist as it is the tour pro. I think you'll get an idea of what I mean.

1:21.1

I love having conversations with Yon, this one included, it's just, it is a blast to talk shop with you on.

1:29.0

So his recent victory seemed the perfect jump-off point to have this particular conversation.

1:33.9

Quick series of numbers for you from the race.

1:36.9

475 miles, 46 hours, 59 minutes was his unofficial time.

1:42.7

He threw an Everest in there with almost 33,000 feet of

1:45.6

climbing. Just watching and following along this year from behind the computer screen where I was,

1:52.9

it was enough to make me want to go back to the Arkansas High Country. I loved following the race

1:58.1

this year. I really enjoyed riding at the time. I enjoyed riding
