I'm your host Lindsay bringing you another episode in the year of polygamy series where we try to understand the practice of

Mormon plural marriage. And this is part two in our episode 84 polygamy controversies.

This will be four parts of episode 84 talking about the different controversies surrounding polygamy.

One of the big controversies is John C. Bennett. You've

heard his name a lot and we're going to talk about him today. And I've brought on someone who you all know

who has been on the podcast before, but who is writing an article and will soon be publishing an article

on John C. Bennett. That person is Mormon historian Brian C. Hills. Can you say hello, Brian?

Hi, Lizzie. Thanks for having me on. Thanks for coming back. It's always fun to have you on.

So for those who don't know, like you and I were just talking about earlier, everybody throws out the name John C. Bennett. We know him as a scoundrel, right? That's the name that gets

thrown around because of the book, the saintly scoundrel. But John C. Bennett is sort of the man,

the myth, and the legend to me. I got to read an early draft of your article, which was fantastic,

and it was interesting for me because I was sort of torn on who this man really is and what he was really about because there's so much, I think, mythos attached to him as almost this storybook villain.

And it's really hard for me to sort of parse out who he is.
