Summary

Our homes can have a powerful effect on our lives. Not only do they reflect our interests and daily responsibilities, they also impact how we feel physically, mentally, and emotionally. Decluttering can be a cathartic experience with benefits that resonate beyond material things. We learn the practice of letting go. We reflect on what we value most. We make space for change. We let more light in. Autoimmune disease is often a wake-up call for this type of priority-setting, and decluttering can be a way to de-stress and support our health. My guest Courtney Carver has multiple sclerosis herself, which inspired her decade-long journey into simple living. Today, we share practical tips for decluttering everything from our homes, to our emails, to our hearts and minds.

every room, every closet, every drawer, every shelf, even the file cabinets, which by the way

1:14.7

took almost longer than everything else.

1:17.6

Slow and steady, won the race.

And while it did take us an entire year to complete the process, it was actually inspired

by a larger decluttering of our lives at the same time.

So my husband reached retirement age.

I simultaneously paired down to one career, giving up a 15-year massage therapy practice,

1:36.9

and focusing on blogging and podcasting full-time.

1:39.9

This allowed me to pare down the time I spent working, which was really important to me.

1:44.2

I had actually been up to working seven days a week between the two jobs, and I'm now down to five,

1:50.0

with the goal of eventually dropping to four.

We also reduced our debts, and I think maybe most importantly, I let go of some beliefs

1:58.3

and fears that were holding me back at the same time.

2:01.0

So it's been a transformative year for me, and it's a process that continues.
