We left off last time at the beginning of 1804,

with the defeat of the French expedition to Haiti,

and the Declaration of an Independent Haitian Republic.

Early 1804 is also roughly where we last left the narrative in Europe.

By this point, Napoleon had been in power for four years,

roughly the length of an American presidential term.

Haiti had been a massive failure, but this was a rare exception.

Generally speaking, Bonaparte had been very successful.
