Hi, I'm Michael and welcome to Beyond the Screenplay, the podcast where each week we do a

0:10.4

conversational deep dive analysis into a film and occasionally a video game. Today we're talking about

0:16.0

my favorite video game series, BioWare's Mass Effect trilogyilogy, released in 2007, 2010, and 2012.

0:23.0

I'm joined today by part of the Beyond the Screenplay team, Brian Bittner.

0:26.7

Hello, hello.

0:27.6

And Alex Cayanos.

0:29.1

Hi.

0:29.7

And our guest today is the creator of the YouTube channel GameMakers Toolkit, which focuses on game design and features some of the very best video essays you will find on YouTube. Mark Brown, thank you for joining us.

0:41.7

Thanks for having me. Thanks for saying. That's very nice. Of course. So we're here to talk about Mass Effect, because it's kind of like tis the season of Mass Effect, right? The Remaster, the legendary edition launches on May 14th. On our game analysis channel story mode,

0:55.9

we recently made a video about the Cure the Genophage mission and Mass Effect 3. We have an

1:00.9

upcoming LFTS video about Mass Effect. Lots of Mass Effect things happening. But Mark, before all this,

1:06.3

last June, you released an excellent epic video called Commanding Shepherd, all about the protagonist

1:12.9

of the Mass Effect Games. It's 53 minutes long, it's much longer than most of your videos.

1:18.2

And so I'm excited to kind of use that as a way in to talk about Mass Effect. But first,

1:22.9

I want to hear about why you started Game Makers Toolkit. I looked in your first video was November of 2014,

1:30.6

and I think it's fair to say that if every frame of painting is like the grandfather of film

1:35.5

video essays, Game Maker's Toolkit is the grandfather of game video essays. So, yeah, how and why

1:41.4

did you start the channel? Yeah, I mean, definitely, every frame painting was an

1:44.7

influence on me and now hopefully I've influenced some other channel. So it's all sort of in that same

1:49.6

nice sort of run. I used to be a traditional games journalist. I, you know, wrote for magazines

1:57.9

and websites. And the bit about it that I always enjoyed the most was talking about game design.

2:04.4

And I was interviewing developers that was all I would ask them about.
