Sometimes strange glowing orbs appear around Brown Mountain in North Carolina. Locals call them the Brown Mountain Lights, and no one really knows what they are. You and a couple friends are tromping through the woods of North Carolina.

The three of you have hiked this trail in the Brown Mountains a couple times before.

But today, you started a little later than you meant to,

and the setting sun, plus a few scattered clouds,

are making the trail dim enough that the fireflies have come out early. Their beautiful blinking

lights make it feel almost as though the forest is full of fairies. One firefly lands on your

arm, and you bring it up to your nose to watch it.

What makes it glow like that, you wonder?

You've heard the word bioluminescence before, but you're still not sure how it actually works.

And just then, a big, wet drop goes plunk on your arm, scaring the firefly away.

You look up.

Those scattered clouds you noticed earlier, they've multiplied and turned a deep, dark, gray.

It seems like they're about to provide a lot more than shade. Plunk, plunk, plunk,

more drops fall. Faster and faster and you can hear a downpour hitting leaves nearby in the forest.

You know you can't leave sight of the trail in these dense woods, so it's very lucky that you all spot a cave opening just a few yards away.
