Summary

Hello and welcome back to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter (though not in this case) podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week! In this episode, Arya Stark wanders the war-torn Riverlands with her new companions: kids who try to rob her, adults who threaten to kill her, and her guardian Yoren, who beats her. It’s...it’s just so much fun to make new friends. This week, we: - Wonder whether Jon will adopt his mother's heraldry when he learns the truth - Frame Arya as the "underfoot" POV among the smallfolk suffering under the clashing kings - Talk about how George gradually paces his reveal of The War in all its horror - Dig into Yoren of the Night's Watch as a figure of ambiguity and tragedy - Munch popcorn as the downtrodden stand up to their oppressors...albeit only briefly, because this is ASOIAF and we can't have nice things for long Next week: King Joffrey Baratheon (or so he calls himself) celebrates the unfortunate fact that he has survived another year in Sansa I! Hello, and welcome to the podcast, podcast, the one true chapter by chapter podcast going through a song, license by our one chapter week.

I'm one of your host, Jeff, better names for Billy Fish.

0:31.5

And I'm your other host, Emmett, better known as poor Quentin.

0:34.7

And welcome to the 75th episode of the Nauticast titled On the Road. Did you like that? I didn't sing at that time. On the road analysis of a Clash of King's Aria. One, two, and three, in which Arias Stark wanders the war-torn riverlands with their new companions, kids who try to rob her, adults who threaten her, and her guardian, Yorne, who beats her.

0:55.2

God, I love friends.

0:56.8

Aren't people just the best?

0:58.9

Well, you are, Jeff.

0:59.8

Thank you for your restraint and not singing.

1:01.6

I promise I'll let you do it whenever you like five or ten times.

1:04.4

We'll make a list.

1:05.1

We'll make a schedule.

1:06.7

So, as you can tell, folks, we're kind of doing the opposite of what we did with the prologue to a Clash of Kings, where it was so dense and weighty and just long that we slid it into two

1:13.7

episodes. This time, we are combining three chapters into a single episode, Ari's first three

1:18.7

chapters in the Clash of Kings, and that's not a reflection on them being of poor quality.

1:22.4

There's a lot of really interesting and valuable stuff that talk about is going to get into this episode, but they are kind of repetitive. So I think if we, we thought if we did individual episodes for each of these three chapters,

1:32.7

we'd kind of get tired and samey by the time we got to the third one. They'd be kind of shorter

1:36.9

episodes than you guys are used to. So we wanted to do both these chapters right and do you folks

1:41.3

right and do them all at once so it can really tackle the themes they all have in

1:44.7

common. And they do have a lot of themes in common and a lot of the same kind of storytelling devices

1:48.7

which George integrates into the narrative, which is a lot of fun to unpack. But like Emmett said,

1:52.6

gets a little repetitive doing these kind of one chapter after the other. That's not to say these aren't

1:57.2

bad chapters like Evan also said. These are actually really good chapters, and I will defend them to the death.
