Summary

In 1841, after years of sacrifice and travel, Orson Hyde arrived in Jerusalem. His brief but impactful mission had innumerable effects on the Church in the Holy Land. In this episode, Professor of Ancient Scripture David Whitchurch takes us through Orson Hyde’s journey, which paved the way for the miraculous opening of the BYU Jerusalem Center. Professor Whitchurch also reflects on his own journey of learning about this spiritual giant—and shows why Orson Hyde’s story is such an important example to us all.

Early before sunrise on the morning of October 24, 1841, a Latter-day St. Apostle named

Orson Hyde crossed the Kidren Valley in the Brook Sedron and ascended up onto the mountain

of Olives, overlooking the old city of Jerusalem.

At great sacrifice, Hyde had traveled for dozens of months, all the way from America and

across Europe to arrive at this very moment.

A moment that had been prophesied he would fulfill years earlier by the Prophet Joseph

Shortly after Hyde's conversion to the church, Hyde remembered that Joseph Smith, quote,

laid his hands upon my head and pronounced these remarkable words in due time thou shalt

go to Jerusalem, the land of thy fathers, and be a watchman unto the house of Israel.

And by thy hands shall the most high do a good work, which shall prepare the way and greatly

facilitate the gathering together of that people.

Sometime after this, Orson Hyde had a vision that lasted six hours where he saw himself

traveling across the globe to preach the gospel and ultimately to visit and dedicate the

Holy Land in Jerusalem.

Now in 1841, he was finally there, and with paper and pen in hand, he solemnly dictated

a prayer to dedicate the Holy Land.

Hyde prayed, quote, now, O Lord, thy servant has been obedient to the heavenly vision which

thou gave us him in his native land.

And under the shadow of thine outstretched arm, he has safely arrived in this place to dedicate

and consecrate this land unto thee, for the gathering together of Judas scattered remnants,
