First Step Act of 2018. The Act was the culmination of a

bipartisan effort to improve criminal justice outcomes as well as to reduce the

size of the federal prison population while also creating processes

to maintain public safety.

The First Step Act works to assess the recidivism risk and to place prisoners in recidivism reducing programs and productive

activities to address their needs. The Act also requires the Bureau of

Prisons to assist inmates in applying for federal and state benefits and to obtain identification,

including a Social Security card, driver's license, or other official photo identification and birth certificate. On this fifth anniversary of the First Step Act,

I wanted to talk about the impact the passage of the Act has had on people

and the many lives that have been changed by it.
