So by the end of last week, we had a lot of indications that Iran was going to pull the trigger on a military response against Israel as what it said would be a reprisal for Israel's strike on what Iran claims was a diplomatic consulate in Syria in which two Islamic

Revolutionary Guard Corps figures were killed.

We should say at the outset that Israel's strike inside Syria was itself retaliatory, a response to an Iran-directed

campaign of violence against Israel that began on October 7th and has continued ever

since.

It's been under attack from Iranian proxies including Hamas, Hezbollah, the

Houthis, the Shiite militias in Iraq and Syria and now the Iranian regime proper.

One of the IRGC targets that was taken out in that strike, Mohammed Reza Zahidi, was implicated in the planning of the October 7th massacre.
