Anyway, in this episode we'll continue our discussion of diplomacy.

Last time we took a close look at two of France's four great power rivals.

First, the Russians, who had been pulled into conflict with France largely over their objective to control the Eastern Mediterranean, which was threatened by Napoleon's expedition to Egypt and conquest of Malta. However, the diplomatic scene of this era was always

fluid and Emperor Paul was capable of changing his mind in an instant. Before long, Russia pulled out of the coalition.

Paul was on the verge of beginning hostilities with Britain, possibly even entering into an alliance with France, until his assassination

changed the course of Russian foreign policy once again.

Next we looked at Austria. Due to the somewhat unique political framework and

geographical position of the Habsburg monarchy, Austria was probably the most

vulnerable of all the great powers.
