Last time we left off of Operation Watchtower or shoe string, as the Marines were calling the invasion of Guadacanau.

Marine units had been landed on the islands of Florida, Tulagi, Gavutu, and Tamambuco, and of course Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942.

Colonel Merritt Edson's 1st Raider Battalion and Marines waited ashore on Touloggi.

Fortunately, they were not shot at, as they did so.

Still, the enemy knew the Americans were there, so sent back messages to Rabao that they would fight to the death.

Three miles east of Touloggi on Gavutu, the first U.S. parachute battalion waited ashore,
