Summary

In this episode I'm joined by Tim Stillman and Tayo Popoola to talk about our elimination from the Europa League after the 0-0 draw with Villarreal last night. We chat about the game, the couple of chances we had in an overall poor performance, the lack of urgency in such a big game, Mikel Arteta's subs (again), and how, over the two legs, we didn't do nearly enough to win and go through to the final. Then the discussion is broadened out to the manager and what happens next with him, his football issues are one thing but also how much the club have put on his shoulders, the dearth of expertise at executive level, where we are being a consequence of KSE's hands-off ownership and lots more.

Hello and welcome to a brand new R-Splug R-Scast right here on R-Splug.com. How are you?

0:27.4

Hope you're well, football aside, obviously it's not been particularly good season.

0:35.1

I guess I was going to say particularly good week or two weeks or last 24 hours or something,

0:40.7

but you know, it's not been a good season. And now it's over. There are still four games in the

0:46.4

Premier League, but let's face it, the end is here. We went out of the Europa League last night

0:52.5

with a tepid, uninspiring, unenergetic, nil nil draw with VRL that lacked the kind of energy

1:04.6

and intensity and occasion that you would expect from a game like this or performance like this.

1:10.8

It was not good. We had a couple of moments, but really the football we played over the two legs,

1:17.1

nobody can say we deserve to be in the Europa League final. And nobody could say based on that

1:23.3

that if we were somehow to win that Europa League final, we would have been worthy of Champions League

1:28.2

football. I know that would have been the outcome and I would have taken it and grasped it with

1:32.4

both hands, but sometimes you reap what you sow and we sowed the seeds of nothingness with a

1:40.5

performance that I don't know, raises many questions, many questions about what happens next.

1:47.4

Why can't we play on big occasions? Why can't we play on small occasions? I know there are

1:53.6

factors like you know, fans would have made a difference, but VRL didn't have fans in their first

1:58.9

leg at home. So you know, these things work both ways. There are no excuses for the way we played

2:04.4

last night. There are no excuses for the season that we've had. It's been way, way, way below the

2:10.9

standards that are acceptable for Arsenal Football Club, even if you accept that there are

2:17.5

mitigating factors that there are things to sort out and things to rebuild and that it is going

2:26.4

to be a bit of a slow process. I use that word in its true sense rather than the sort of

2:32.9

Arsenal meme sense at the moment. You know, this squad and this group of players may not be perfect,

2:39.4

but I think it's better than what we've seen this season. It should certainly be way above mid-table.
