Summary

This week, we're turning our attention to possibly the most unique of Japan's colonial ventures during the imperial era: Manchuria. Most know about Manchuria because of its role in the turbulent politics of the 1930s, but Japanese involvement in the region goes back quite a bit further. But first, what even is Manchuria in the first place?

Hello and welcome to the History of Japan podcast episode 605, The Final Frontier, Part 1.

0:23.5

So, now that I've taken three weeks to answer a patron request question, let's tackle a nice,

0:29.3

straightforward subject that I'm sure will take me no time at all.

0:33.1

Imperialism.

0:35.3

Specifically, patron Andre pointed out a rather large gap in my coverage of the history of the Japanese Empire.

0:41.3

We've talked about Taiwan. We've talked about Korea. We've talked about Micronesia and Hokkaido and Okinawa.

0:48.3

But we have not, at least not substantially, talked about Manchuria.

0:53.3

1:09.1

Japanese era in Manchuria has a lot more significance than just this was what got Japan

1:21.9

to leave the League of Nations.

1:25.1

So let's talk about it.

1:26.4

To what extent does Manchuria fit the mold of the rest of the Japanese Empire?

1:30.2

To what extent does it not?

1:32.5

First things first, though, what the hell is Manchuria?

1:35.5

Where even is that?

1:37.4

The what is unfortunately a bit complicated, the where, thankfully, is rather straightforward.

1:43.6

Presumably, if you listen to this podcast, you are

1:45.8

at least loosely aware where Japan is. I mean, I really hope you are. It's a podcast, so it's

1:50.4

kind of hard for me to show you. You are also, in turn, presumably aware that Korea is next to Japan.
