One of the questions I get asked a lot is about grad school: what's it like, who's it for, what applications are like, and so on. But I've been out of academia for almost 10 years, so it's hard to say what things are like today. Fortunately, a listener and friend was willing to hop on and share her far more recent experiences!
Thanks again to Charlotte for sharing her story.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to the History of Japan podcast, episode 601. And today we're going to be doing something |
| 0:23.1 | a little bit different than usual. First, of course, last week you all heard episode 600. |
| 0:28.7 | I really enjoyed answering all of your questions, but one question I constantly get that I did |
| 0:34.1 | not think I could fit into that shorter episode is about academia. |
| 0:38.3 | Apparently, I have a lot of aspiring grad students or people who have thought about graduate school who listen to the show. |
| 0:44.3 | And many of you have asked me for advice, for thoughts on graduate school, and I'm always happy to give them. |
| 0:50.3 | But there's one challenge there, which is that I have been out of the |
| 0:54.7 | academic game for quite some time at this point, almost 10 years, as of next year, it will be 10 |
| 0:59.8 | years. However, I'm very fortunate as well to have a listener and friend who was willing to come |
| 1:06.1 | on the show and share some more recent experience. So this week we have a special guest. |
| 1:11.2 | Would you like to introduce yourself, special guest? |
| 1:14.3 | This is incredibly surreal to me, because I've been on the receiving end of this podcast all |
| 1:18.6 | this time and it's crazy to be here now. |
| 1:20.5 | But my name is Charlotte. |
| 1:22.7 | I'm 22 this year, and I recently just graduated with first class honors from the University of Oxford, |
| 1:28.9 | where I read history. A little bit more about myself. I grew up in Hong Kong and I was there |
| 1:36.6 | up until the age of 14, after which my parents shipped me off to school in the UK. And we officially |
| 1:42.1 | made the move to London at 18. So very exciting, big city lives. And then I went to |
| 1:48.7 | Oxford when I was 19 after taking a gap year where I spent three years at St. Edmund Hall, |
| 1:55.1 | which was my undergrad college. I guess a little bit more about myself is that I actually didn't get into Oxford the first time |
| 2:05.2 | around when I applied, which is actually quite interesting talking about grad school from that |
| 2:09.6 | perspective because I have experienced quite a few kind of knockdowns in my academic career |
