September 7th is World Field Epidemiology Day so we sat down with Adam Roth, Head of Fellowship Programmes at ECDC to talk about what field epidemiology is, and about the fellowship pathways, EPIET and EUPHEM, that ECDC offers.

0:24.9	This past year through the pandemic, you might have heard of ECDC being mentioned here and there,
0:29.3	but you may be unfamiliar with what actually goes on here in Stockholm when we're not talking
0:32.9	about the COVID-19 pandemic.
0:35.6	As an EU agency, ECDC aims to strengthen Europe's defences against infectious
0:40.2	diseases. We cover a wide range of subjects including surveillance, preparedness, epidemic
0:45.4	intelligence and response measures. We provide scientific advice, give public health training,
0:50.5	and raise awareness through our disease programs. But simply, we do quite a lot.
0:54.5	In celebration of World Field Epidemiology on September 7th, we sat down and spoke with
0:59.6	Adam Roth, head of fellowship programs here at ECDC for today's episode. World Field Epidemiology
1:05.8	Day itself is organized by the training programs in epidemiology and public health interventions network,
1:12.1	much more easily referred to as Teffinette.
1:14.6	The day aims to raise awareness of the vital role that field epidemiologists play in protecting
1:19.7	the health of populations and global health security in general.
1:23.8	While we will let Adam go into detail of what field epidemiology actually is, before doing so,
1:28.9	we wanted to shed a little light on the date itself, 7th of September.
1:33.2	On the 31st of August, 1854, a major outbreak of cholera occurred in Soho, London.
