Now, let's begin episode six, a miracle in a sea of disasters.

Frankly and definitely, there is danger ahead.

Danger against which we must prepare. We shall defend our island, whatever the cross may be.

We will fight on the beaches. we shall fight on the landing grounds,

we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, which will fight in the hills.

We shall never surrender.

On the morning of May 15th, with the German armor sprinting toward the Channel coast,

Paul Renan, the French Prime Minister, called Winston Churchill to tell him they were defeated and that the front had been broken at Sedan.

Churchill was incredulous.

Surely, he asked, it can't have happened so soon.

He tried to reason with Renaud and remind him that offensives must halt.

They must resupply and consolidate.

After a brief silence, Renaud simply repeated,

We are defeated.

We have lost the battle.
