Summary

My friends Jeralee Renshaw and Peter Ryan (active Latter-day Saints) talk about a facebook group called Waters of Mormon for Latter-day Saints who need a safe place to process complicated church topics (history, current issues, or difficult experiences). Members of the group are working to stay engaged with the Church. Jeralee and Peter (two of the moderators of the group) talk about vetting criteria to be able to join the group (including being familiar with the Gospel Topic Essays), group mission, and rules of the group. They also share some of about their story navigating difficult topics and why they stay members of the Church. I joined this group in 2016 during my mini-faith crisis and it was key for me to reconstruct a sustainable framework to remain an active member of the Church. If you are working to stay in the Church and also looking for a safe place to process complicated church topics, please listen to this podcast. It will help you decide if this group would be helpful for you. And you are welcome to share this podcast with others who you feel might benefit from joining the group. Thank you, Jeralee and Peter,—and the rest of the moderation team—for your much needed work in our community. Welcome listeners to another episode of Listen, Learn, and Love hosted by Richard Osler.

Before I introduce my guests, I just want to introduce, and I have two guests, the scope of this podcast.

0:17.2

This podcast is to introduce a Facebook group called Waters of Mormon. It's a Facebook group for

0:24.3

Latter-day Saints that are working to stay active in the church, but are working through really

0:30.3

complicated issues. Some may call them in a faith crisis or a faith deconstruction,

0:35.7

reconstruction. But their end goal is to find a way to stay in

0:39.4

the church. And it's a group I joined why I'm during my way, I say, assignment way back in 2016,

0:45.5

that was very helpful for me as I found a community of people. There's about 2,500 in the group

0:51.0

that are looking to navigate really complicated topics in our faith and

0:55.8

the principles and ideas that were shared with me really came a wonderful community as I

1:01.8

wanted to stay in the church and was working through really complicated things.

1:05.9

I continued to be a member of the group, but I just felt impressed to reach out to the moderators of the group and

1:12.6

see if they'd be willing to come on the podcast to talk about the group. The group is not,

1:18.1

the group has a lot of criteria to meet to get into it. And they will talk about that and why

1:23.6

there's criteria. They will talk about just the scope of the group and what they're

1:28.7

trying to accomplish and how moderation works. It's a heavily moderated group for important

1:33.5

reasons. So that's a little bit of the background. So if you've left the church, it's not a

1:39.9

group for you to join. If you are not looking to sort of discuss or understand or in the complicated issue

1:47.1

to the church and want to stay clear from those issues,

1:49.7

it's really not a group for you to join, but it's a group that we'll be talking about.

1:54.3

So my guests on today's podcast, my friend Jerry Renshaw and Peter Ryan. Welcome to the podcast. Thanks, Richard.

Jerry Lee, just so were clear, was on episode 571, and she talked about another Facebook group,
